Spring Island has been described as “a great maritime forest.” Live oaks cast their shadows across the landscape and these imposing ancient trees along with 90 other species thrive – more than three times the number found on neighboring barrier islands. Six hundred types of flora, 700 fauna types, and 19 varieties of soil have also been identified on the island. Surrounded by saltwater estuaries, the island is an ideal setting for both woods and wetlands. And winding its way throughout all this natural wonder is an intersecting series of trails.
Totaling 30 miles in their entirety, these trails allow walkers, bikers, equestrians (and the occasional golf cart stocked with fishing gear) to experience all the different types of habitats on Spring Island and offer access to the 30+ saltwater ponds along our shore and freshwater ponds throughout our forest.
Our Members are artists, lifelong learners and adventurers. For over a decade, the Trailblazers Program has fostered a love for exploration of our Island. Member participants engage in bi-weekly guided walks every Saturday morning. Each excursion lasts approximately one hour and takes them through various scenic trails and is equal parts educational and peaceful.
